MovieMerge is an application that enables you to put a graphic over top of a QuickTime movie. It can blend any QuickTime supported image over any QuickTime supported movie.

I wrote the application because I couldn't find any cheap way of making a friend's movie that he took of his dog in portrait orientation into landscape orientation without distorting the movie. And then I needed to figure out what to do with the "ears". That's where the overlay of the image came in.

New in 1.01! Just before the save dialog appears, I show the standard export settings dialog for QuickTime movies. With the export settings dialog, you can set the compression for video and audio (if available). You can also tap into some of the cool filter features of QuickTime.

The application is very simple.

  1. Add Movie...
Any QuickTime compatible movie will work. If you need to handle Windows Media, I'd suggest checking out Flip4Mac. Muxed MPEG files are a bit of an issue as the audio and video data are mixed together. MovieMerge will work, but the audio will be lost. Demux the movie first.
  2. Add Image...
Any QuickTime compatible image file will work. I suggest using Photoshop to create psd files or you can use png files with an alpha channel. Just about any image format will work, so you can use gif files if you wish. For excellent Photoshop Tutorials visit www.photoshopbasics.com.
  3. Merge...
The final step. After creating the movie, you'll be asked to save it. All of the sound and movie tracks from the original movie will also be added to the new movie. Note: muxed mpeg files will lose their audio.

I think this could be a usefull little application. You can use it for watermarking, as in the example below. You can also use this application to add a sort of station identification to your movies before posting them to YouTube.

I'm releasing this as Donationware. Basically, if you find it useful, give me some money. $10 sounds like a good number.
